As an elementary, school-based, speech-language pathologist, I work with students in several Exceptional Student Education preschool classes. The students in these classes are diagnosed with Autism, Down syndrome, Speech and Language Delays, Intellectual Disabilities, and Developmental Delays. Many of my students are nonverbal or minimally verbal and use technology, manual communication boards, and pictures to make their wants and needs known.
My students inspire me every single day with how hard they work to achieve something most people take for granted, communication at even the most basic level.
My Project
Research shows that children need to move! Keeping students active keeps their minds more alert and focused. My state added an additional 30 minutes per day of "recess" because of this. Many teachers have tried adding additional "movement" resources in the classroom. I have seen the difference it has made by giving students the power to choose what seating option works best for them. I believe offering these same choices in my therapy room will allow my students to take ownership of their speech and language therapy. Many of my students demonstrate difficulty maintaining attention to a task even for a 30 minute therapy session. We often have to take "brain breaks" (i.e. sit-ups, yoga stretches, etc.) in order to complete a therapy session.
Removing the obstacle of the need for physical movement will allow my students to focus and attend to therapy, thereby allowing for quicker improvements with their communication skills.
I believe that by modifying my students' learning environment using flexible seating, I will be able to provide better and more targeted speech and language therapy.
