My students need flexible seating options to encourage focus and learning!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
As a third grade teacher at a Title I school in Charlotte, NC, I have been given the opportunity to work with students at an exciting age to help them exceed expectations and prepare for their futures! Within my school 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Many of them come from homes that are struggling either financially, or with structure in their household. 13% of our students are considered to be homeless, and many struggle with support at home. These scholars come to school every day with baggage, but they come to school with it being their safe space. I am here to not only educate them academically, but also to be a mentor and positive role model in their lives.
My goal throughout this year, and my career in education is to guide students in exceeding even their own expectations.
Unfortunately, teaching at a school with an extreme poverty rate comes with a lack of resources. It is an indescribable feeling seeing a child's face light up at the sight of school supplies, and a fun learning environment. My goal is to provide my scholars with an infinite number of these moments.
As we begin the next school year, I am looking to expand my classroom's flexible seating options! My students come to school with excess energy, and many different needs on a daily basis. Providing them with a variety of seating options will encourage focus and success in the classroom. In my classroom we are currently utilizing wobble stools, and carpets around the room to stray away from the traditional desk and chair. With only a few wobble stools, I am not able to provide ALL students with daily access to flexible seating. With your support, my students will be beyond excited to grow our classroom with balance ball chairs and a rocking chair that can be used in a variety of ways!
With the addition of balance ball chairs, all of my students will be able to engage in a fun, exciting learning environment on a daily basis!
These chairs will be used as alternate seating options for students each day. The addition of the rocking chair will provide a place for students to read independently, and share their work with the class. It will create a space of relaxation, as well as a place for leadership and ownership of students' work! By giving students the opportunity to choose their seating they are able to determine their needs for the day, and how to address them. Whether they need to stand, sit in a chair to focus, or use a balance ball to get their wiggles out, my goal is to provide all of these options and more to them each and every day!
