Help me give my students a more flexible environment to meet the demands of flexible thinking in the Research/ Gifted classroom! These 2 chairs with tablets will allow my students to be in a comfortable environment, versus plastic!
My job at my school is to provide gifted services and enrichment opportunities for high ability students. Therefore, this year, I currently have 42 students enrolled to receive direct instruction from me but I teach around 250 weekly and keep and analyze data on roughly 170.
These 42 students receive intense, small group or one-on-one exposure, with me, and high-level problem-solving and creative challenges that aren't provided elsewhere.
They need their learning environment to be flexible to support and encourage their open-ended, creative, flexible thought processes.
My school, stationed near an AFB, taught 106 military students out of its 795 enrolled. Our free/reduced-price lunch numbers are between 44-48%.
It is my goal, after using the materials with my students, that they have the environment necessary to support the types of intense learning required in this class setting. Hard plastic chairs and desks don't work for all, and students need to be immersed in an environment supportive of their needs, social emotionally, academically, and physically.
My Project
I am currently pursuing my second master's degree in education. I have 3 children of my own, and we, often times, visit the library so that I may work while my children are occupied with books and educational games.
I found these chairs with tablets attached and was instantly drawn to how conducive they were to comfort and thinking!
Considering I ask my students to complete intense research, similar to what is required of me, I felt it necessary to provide them an alternative environment to the plastic chairs we currently possess.
Often times, my students engage in authentic research spanning most of the months out of the school year. This type of grit and ability to stay focused when research and thinking is difficult is taxing on my students, yet good for their growth and development. Because of the extensive work I request of them, I'd like to work to make my classroom more flexible, more conducive to the needs of my students. With these chairs, I feel that I am off to a great start for creating an environment supportive of the learner!
