My Students

My fourth grade students have a heart for learning and a need to be comfortable as they discover new things. Having a selection of seating choices will allow them to find a spot that best fits their needs to focus and be comfortable to learn.

My students are hardworking, motivated, and eager learners.

Our school is in a district with students who have a variety of experiences and learning styles. We are growing rapidly, in both size and ethnic diversity. I love teaching and watching my students soar throughout the year.

The need for my students to have brain breaks and movement throughout the day is clear. I also see the need for them to stand up, sit on the floor, use different seating options, or work at desks and lowered tables as they work. Right now, we have tables and chairs, and it doesn't feel like the right fit for them. I want to provide the best learning environment to meet their personal needs. Having this project fully funded would allow me to provide a better seating fit for each individual.

My Project

Students spend the greatest amount of their "awake hours" in the classroom. They, like most of us, want to be comfortable when they create and work. Think about companies like Facebook or Google that provide alternative office spaces for their employees to be creative and productive. That spot might be a stool, comfy chair, or a place to move. Why shouldn't classrooms provide those same options? Who wants to sit in a plastic chair all day?

My students will use stools, ball seats, lap desks, and a quiet "get-away so I can think spots" for comfortable seating that supports creative collaboration and focus in our classroom.

We all know that when we are uncomfortable, we are distracted and less productive. These materials will be used in our classroom to provide comfortable spaces to work while learning and collaborating with classmates. Introducing my students to flexible seating will give them the opportunity to explore what works best for them.

Having a funded project with seating options would empower students to take ownership over their learning and success and increase engagement. It would also reduce distractions and other behavioral concerns that might arise from lack of movement. Having alternative seating would also promote student engagement with their peers through increased collaboration. With flexible seating options, students would gain the freedom to make choices that are best for their learning.
