Our fifth grade class is a dynamic environment that fosters inquiry based learning. We believe that all kids should have equal opportunities to explore and create rich academic experiences. In order to make this a reality, all students should be able to sit a seat that is right for their learning needs.
We have a group of 30 fifth grade students in our public school classroom in the heart of Brooklyn.
Our classroom is filled with various cultures and life experiences due to students with families from around the world. In turn empathy and understanding are naturally embedded in our classroom communities. Students are the center of our classroom communities. We encourage them to guide their own learning and become thinkers that question the world around them.
My Project
The flexible seating this project supports is essential to the collaborative learning of 2018!
Recently I looked around my classroom and thought, "Why is it that so much has changed since I was in 5th grade, but the seating arrangements look almost identical?" We hope to give students the chance to shift their seating from lesson to lesson or day to day depending on their needs in that moment.
Currently, our classroom has a range of outdated school chairs from the 80s that are heavy, unstable, and cumbersome. Our goal is to shift from seating arrangements of the past to new systems that support all kids. To achieve this goal, we've created a project where kids can sit on an exercise ball, wobble stool, sitting desk, chair with a fidget band, and more.
We believe that the funding of this project will provide comfort, differentiation, and focus to our students.
