My fourth grade students come from a variety of economic backgrounds with almost half receiving free or reduced lunch. A percentage of my students have learning disabilities such as ADD and ADHD. Some have experienced homelessness and or have family and traumatic situations that cause academic and emotional problems.
Regardless of their economic, family, and educational backgrounds, my students love learning and coming to school each day!
Fourth graders are extremely inquisitive and ready to learn. I love the determination they have for figuring out how to solve a multi-step problems. They learn best in hands-on, authentic, and meaningful learning activities. They love to be active and many times are fighting the urge to get up and move around while they are supposed to be in one specific area. With the help of flexible seating options, my students will be able to select a type of seat that reflects their learning style and release their energy at the same time!
My Project
I currently teach 42 active children in Math and Social Studies throughout the day. They like to move while sitting, move while writing, and move while doing most things in our classroom. Sitting still using conventional school seating is just not something they do well (or should do well). I would love every student to be able to select the type of seating that allows them to pay attention and be actively engaged for longer periods of time.
Currently we have a limited number of active seating options, but more are needed so ALL of the students have a choice that fits their learning style best - not just half of the class.
Active seating is also highly beneficial to students with learning disabilities such as ADD, ADHD, or even sensory perception disorders–having the ability to move about freely is critically important when it comes to being able to focus on classroom work.
Your donation would make it possible for my students to maintain focus on their work rather than wanting to move around. Your help will give each one of my students the chance for a solid foundation! These items will bring excitement to their learning and will give my students the ability to concentrate on their academics that they so desperately need! This project will keep on giving in subsequent years!
