One of the biggest goals I have for my students is for them to take ownership over their learning. Students learn in all different styles and seating in the classroom should reflect those differences.
I want to provide my students with all the tools they need to be successful in the classroom.
I teach at a Title I school in Marshfield, MA. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. This coming school year my classroom will be made up of a diverse group of learners ages 7 and 8.
Each year students enter the classroom full of energy and readiness to learn. I work hard to create a classroom that feels safe and comfortable for all students. I want my classroom to be a place where all students feel they have a home away from home. A space where they can do their best learning.
My Project
Providing students with flexible seating will make a huge impact on their learning. Seating options encourage students to make smart, independent choices about how they learn. Students who struggle to pay attention will be able to chose a seating option that allows them to listen and participate in learning. A variety of seating choices will also foster small group collaborative learning.
Plenty of teacher testimony point to flexible seating in helping with classroom behaviors.
Flexible seating empowers students to make good learning choices. Using a wobble chair allows them to move and get the wiggles out. The two flexible seating options I am looking for get students out from behind a traditional desk and out and around the classroom. Whether it is sitting at a low table, working on the carpet with a peer; these sitting options give students the flexibility to work on the move. This will reduce some of the traditional problem behaviors that arise from sitting still at a desk for long periods of time. Students will be able to attend to lessons better and be ready to work when they get to choose where to sit.
By supporting this project you will support all different learning styles and help students do their best learning, no matter where they sit in class.
