Our school promotes whole student learning by assessing our students on collaboration, critical thinking, technology literacy, and oral and written communication skills, in addition to content knowledge. Our school is a public school where more than three quarters of our students are from low income households and classroom donations are hard to come by.
At my school, we promote student creativity through collaborative, project centered, and student driven learning.
Many students are afraid of mathematics and they quickly give up in the face of difficult or "impossible" problems. My students, however, are unafraid of challenges and dedicated to the process of learning.
My Project
I want my classroom to be a place where students are comfortable with tackling tough problems, and that can be difficult in a rigid environment. Many students fidget naturally with disastrous consequences, like rocking back in their chairs and inevitably crashing to the floor. Studies have shown that movement and flexible seating help students wake up their brains. I have noticed in my own classroom that when students are physically comfortable, they are more willing to get mentally uncomfortable, which happens frequently in a math classroom.
I am requesting enough chairs so that students actually have a choice in where they sit instead of racing to get a seat.
While we have already taken steps to make our classroom more comfortable, there aren't enough alternative seats to truly give every student a choice in where to sit. The different seating options (bungee chairs, wobble stools, saucer chairs, floor cushions, stools, and bean bag chairs) have all been suggested by my students, because I want them to have ownership in building our classroom together. In particular, I want to make sure my learners with ADHD have an outlet for their excess energy that will allow them to focus on their education. I am also requesting clipboards so students do not feel as though they have to sit at a table to be productive.
