I have the pleasure of teaching 30 of the most amazing, dedicated learners I have ever met. Everyday they walk in with a positive attitude ready to see what adventure our novel will take us on. As a fifth grade reading teacher, we spend a lot of time working in book clubs and novel study groups.
The students love working with their peers and creating their own personal learning space in the classroom.
We spend approximately 80% of our time together working around the room in comfortable spaces that will activate our learning.
My students are so responsible and committed to their learning that they each have a special space in the room where they feel they learn best.
Next year I will transform my classroom into a cafe style, relaxed space where ALL learners feel comfortable, happy, and ready to take on the day! This year, we had a few pillows and cushions, and the level of engagement and quality of work was phenomenal. I want to have this option for all of my students, as I have seen first hand how allowing flexibility can encourage social learning, and bring even the most reluctant learners out of their shell. Bean bags and floor cushions will allow me to lower our current tables, and will also allow for more space in an already tight classroom. My kids will be SO excited to start 5th grade in a flexible, engaging, and most importantly FUN environment!
