My students come from very diverse backgrounds. Our school qualifies for 100% free lunch for all of our students. A majority of our students face very difficult home lives each day. They come to school for a safe place that guarantees them food while they are there. School provides consistency with routines, schedules, and supportive teachers.
I believe that a student's education is very important, but I care about the well being of my students more than anything.
They will use their education throughout their life, but they will also become citizens of our community. It is important to teach children what it means to be a apart of a community and how they can help their community. It all starts with a classroom community. Inside my four walls, my students will know that I care about them, that they are safe, and how to help each other in our classroom community.
My Project
I have recently starting learning more and more about flexible seating in the classroom and believe it would be a great addition to my own class! The benefits seem to be great as children are learning differently everyday. There are many types of flexible seating. Some allow the children to bounce while sitting to help when they get antsy. It helps them with health as they are able to move more and not just sit still. This is also an option to give the children choices that empower them without taking any learning away. Children love to make choices and feel more responsible when they decide on something rather than just being told to do something.
I believe in doing anything possible to get my class to learn!
If that means we need to do flexible seating, then I'm definitely game! I would use this seating as a way to break out of the norm of just using desks. I would have different stations set up with the different seating options, like excercise balls and balance pods, and the children would be able to choose which one they would like to go to. We would have guidelines and regulations in order to use this, as they would need to know it is a special privilege to earn, and not something that is just given to them. We would still have desks as well so they could choose to stay at their desk or know that they have to follow the correct seating expectations or they will be sent back to their desk and lose that privilege for a certain amount of time.
This would always bring fun to our classroom and be a place where the children want to be!
