I teach in a high school resource room in a rural community in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Our school services students in 6th-12th grade. Over 80% of our school's population qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our students are also served free breakfast daily. For many students our school is their safe place away from unstable home environments.
I have been told time and time again, "Miss Nordengren, I work Many of my students have ADHD which makes it very hard for them to sit still in desks.
With flexible seating arrangements this would give them the opportunity to work in a space where they are free to move a bit more instead of being confined to uncomfortable desks.
I have always believed that my students are not defined by their disabilities, but by their abilities. I work with students with eligibility ranging from students with autism to students with a range of learning disabilities. My students come into my classroom everyday with smiles on their faces no matter the adversity they face.
My Project
I just moved to our local high school and was left with a very bare room with only very uncomfortable desks for students to sit in. My students always ask me if they can sit on the floor instead to save them selves from sitting in desks all day.
Flexible seating would give my students the chance to complete their work in a more comfortable environment.
My students have enjoyed the couple strands of Christmas lights I have up in my room, but it is currently very dark with all the lights off. Adding a lamp and a couple more strands of lights would make the room a headache-free environment from overhead lights.
