I teach 43 eager-to-learn third-grade students in a low socioeconomic school. I team teach with another third-grade teacher. I teach math to two classes, in addition to all other subjects (excluding reading) to my homeroom. More than half of my class receives free lunch.
My students show up every day excited to be at school and ready to learn.
Unfortunately, many of them do not have traditional learning materials at home that foster learning through hands-on learning experiences. I need your help updating the materials in my classroom. Due to economic strains, our classrooms are suffering. Without your help, it is impossible for me to purchase these things.
I would like to provide my students with flexible seating options.
Children have a developmental need for movement.
Alternative seating in the form of pillows, seats, and floor cushions will allow my students to be more comfortable and change positions throughout their day. This, in turn, will increase blood flow to the brain, help to improve concentration and increase focus, reduce restlessness, and prevent boredom and distractions in class by keeping the body active and the mind engaged.
Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work, quickly and easily pair up, work in small groups, or meet together as a whole class. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed. Please help me bring these research-based seating options to my classroom.
