Thirty years ago to this day, I attended a wonderful magnet school. The kids were very diverse, the learning was based on projects, and we were given more independence than at a typical elementary school. I loved it so much that it became my dream to one day teach there.
Our school is a span school from 4th grade to 12th grade.
About half of our students are Title I students and they receive free and reduced lunch. The majority of our students take the school bus. Their day starts at 6:00 in the morning and by the time class starts, they are already tired. They need extra motivation to keep them awake and challenged.
My students have big dreams! They dream of reaching their full potential. With your help, we can acquire the tools and skills to reach those goals. Many of the most in-demand 21st-century jobs require science-related skills. My students need access to the scientific knowledge and experiences that will enable them to take AP science classes in high school, be accepted into top universities, and contribute to the scientific discoveries of the future.
My Project
Last year and this year, I was fortunate to be able to get flexible seating for my class. The seating has absolutely transformed my teaching. It allows the kids to sit wherever they are comfortable in order to get their work done. In addition, the seating will allow the kids to move around to work with different people. Finally, the seating allows the students to sit very close to me when learning so they are right in the center of instruction.
I love the flexible seating so much, but I need more!
I want to provide more students with the opportunity to move around on bouncy chairs while they work. I also want the flexibility to have another floor the kids can sit at in order to collaborate with each other. These seating arrangements will allow for a huge increase in student engagement, as my incredible students will now have the opportunity to choose their seat on a daily basis to gain access to the place where they learn best.
