I am a first-year sixth grade teacher to a group of wonderful 11 and 12-year old learners. My students are independent and are eager to learn new information that is relevant to their own lives. They love to experiment with new ideas and love to share their knowledge and experiences with peers and adults.
Middle school can be a rough time for young students because they are going through many changes, their classroom experience is changing and they are trying to express themselves in new ways.
My students are also unique because many of them are students of military parents. I want to provide my students with as many wonderful experiences as possible this year, as they prepare to go into junior high.
My Project
As adults, we are able to choose where to sit, how we learn best, what area of a room we focus well in and so on. So often we tell students exactly how to learn, what to do, where to sit, when to stand, when to go to the bathroom and more. We forget to make sure all of our students are in their best learning environment. Flexible seating like balance balls and stools allows students to choose where and what works best for them in the classroom. This provides a highly conducive learning environment for each individual student. Whether they learn best in a group setting, solo, standing, sitting, etc. these materials will give my students the opportunity to explore their most effective learning strategies.
