I asked my students to describe our classroom in five words and they selected: amazing, talkative, helpful, talented, and smart. In our room, students have ownership of their own learning, and a lot of what goes on happens organically.
Creating community is essential to taking risks and the facilitation of deeper learning.
I care about my kids and they know it. Every morning before we enter our classroom, we stop at our door and I welcome them into the classroom with a hug, high-five, handshake, or as in the case of one student, a secret handshake.
Taking the time to know my students well, not just as learners, but also as people has helped to create a real sense of belonging in our classroom family. No matter the obstacles they face outside the class, they strive to be the best they can be every single day.
My Project
If you were to walk our my classroom on any given day, in addition to students actively engaged in learning, you would also see a bunch of empty desks! My students are in school for almost seven hours a day, around five of which they are confined to the four walls of our classroom. Sitting in the same hard plastic seat can get tiring for anyone, especially young children. So if you looked a little further, you would see my students working in a variety of places around our classroom. We are requesting exercise balls for a comfortable classroom learning environment.
One of their favorite places to work is on the floor.
They like to lie on one of our rugs with a clipboard, or sit on the floor with a pillow to work. With this project I am asking for four exercise balls to continue building my flexible seating options for our classroom. I want to provide my 21st century scholars with more 21st century options of seating. Just as you would see if you would walk into your favorite coffee shop to have a drink and catch up on some work, I want to provide my students flexible seating options which are not only comfortable (and durable), but provide them with options to learn in a manner in which they feel most comfortable.
Finally, I am also requesting some books for my students. I am headed to fourth grade this year with my students that I had in third grade last year, so I would like some higher level books for my students. I am requesting some books targeted towards 4th graders, as well as a book, Restart, that I would like to read to the students during our read aloud time.
