Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with an amazing group of first graders. The district I teach in is a Title I school district that serves a large population of low income, migrant students where one hundred percent of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and hardships but no matter their situation, they come to school ready to learn with a smile on their face. I am truly blessed to work with the kindest, resilient, and hardworking students. They never cease to amaze me.
My Project
These student-centered seating options will help my first graders thrive in our classroom. My students use flexible seating in our room so they have opportunities for movement. The stability ball chair, stools, and wobble cushions will allow students to select that seat or me to have a student move to that seat to promote engagement and hard work.
Stability balls improve posture, engage muscles and parts of the brain required to maintain balance, and enhance focus on school work.
Instead of being confined to a desk all day, they are given the choice to work on the floor, at a wobble stool, on a balance ball etc. One big complaint is that they need more options, other than a standard desk or chair. These new seating options will allow them to be active in the area they spend most of their day, the classroom. These seating options will show them that they can move WHILE they work. Too many Americans spend too much of their day sitting down and still. This has lead to high obesity rates and poor posture. By having alternative seating methods, students will learn great skills that will carry over for the rest of their lives. Thank you for making this dream a reality!
