Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom of twenty-two students come from culturally diverse, and often times difficult, backgrounds. About 85% are from low-income families and they receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch while at school.
My students are full of energy, love to learn, and are eager to succeed.
They try so hard to follow directions and pay attention, but that is often times a difficult task when having to sit in a traditional school chair. Some prefer to stand, but the desk isn't high enough and they end up bent over. Others need to wiggle around, but the traditional chairs don't provide that option.
My Project
Flexible seating is a must for everyone. Think about how you learn best; is it sitting upright in a hard chair, standing at a desk, or wobbling around on a wobble stool because the movement helps you focus? The goal of flexible seating is to provide the students with a choice of where and what feels best for them to learn. Everyone is different and respecting these differences helps everyone to feel more comfortable, become less irritable, and focus on the lesson being given.
Standing desks will provide students with the option of moving their legs around while working.
Wobble stools will helps strengthen students core muscles while at the same time improving focus. Soft seat cushions give students the option of sitting on the ground and working at a low level table.
