Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from diverse backgrounds, their families come from all over the world, and as a result the learners in my classroom come to me with a variety of perspectives. The challenges many of them face both inside the classroom and outside the classroom are in many cases, unimaginable. The majority of the population of students at my school come from low-income homes, yet they come to school each day positive and eager to learn. Despite every obstacle they face, their determination, persistence, and attitude inspire me as a teacher/individual everyday.
Each day my students step in my classroom, it is my mission to provide them with the best education possible.
They deserve to have the tools necessary to reach their goals and be successful. My students are constantly questioning, challenging, and growing in order rise up to the academic challenges I present to them.
Every individual in my classroom has a variety of needs, academically, physically and emotionally. Many students will come to me several grade levels below and lacking many grade-level skills necessary to succeed. It is my goal to fill in these gaps and get them on track!
My Project
As I enter into my third year teaching 5th grade, I am in search of more ways to meet the ever-growing needs of my students. This year I will have a class of around 20 students who will stay with me for the duration of the day. While I integrate brain breaks into my daily schedule, many students require more than just a few 5 minute breaks to release their built up energy and fully focus on learning.
Incorporating a variety of seating options like wobble chairs and cushions as well as exercise balls, will provide an outlet for my students to positively channel their energy, while finding success in their day to day school work.
This outlet to release and positively channel their energy could not come at a more prudent time. Our school is undergoing construction this academic year, which will lead to exciting positive changes in the future, but at this time is further restricting the children's already limited access to outdoor play due to their designated space for recess being used for the work being done.
