My fifth-grade students are bright, active learners negotiating the "tween" years. We focus on becoming lifelong learners and mindful members of our global community. Our school is in a middle-class neighborhood community where we walk or ride our bikes and skateboards to school every day. We have a large percentage of foster children living in group homes in our neighborhood.
Our class is exceptional, meaning we have children of widely varying abilities and readiness learning together.
We all have special gifts, such as learning to speak several languages, exhibiting exceptional strength of character, or being gifted learners. I want my students to participate in the best learning experiences imaginable.
My Project
My students love to move. They are growing and changing physically and mentally every day. When I began teaching ten and eleven-year-olds, I was startled by their strong mind and body connection and their need for movement. I began collecting stability balls to replace chairs for students who needed to move while learning. It's been a huge success and my students love to bounce and wiggle as we learn. We study the research behind movement and the brain. My students even sign contracts agreeing to appropriate behavior when choosing flexible seating.
Help us grow our flexible seating choices.
In addition to stability balls, help us add standing carts for kids who love to stand and work. We would also like cushions for those who prefer chairs. We will use the stools for group work around the room and at our tables.
