Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I haven't met my students yet because school begins next week. This is my first year teaching and I'll meet my first class on Monday and I'm so excited to get to know them! They are in first grade and the kindergarten teachers tell me that I will be welcoming a great class. They informed me that they are a bit squirrely and fidgety, which is to be expected of first graders. I also have a student with an orthopedic disability, and I will do everything I can to support him. My class size thus far is 24 students, though more might be added before the first day. As soon as I get to know my class, I will update this description.
My Project
In first grade, many students really struggle to sit still, which often means that most of their focus is on staying still rather than their learning. That is why I chose various items, like cushions (including wobble cushions), balance ball chairs, stools, pads, and chair bands. They can use almost every item independently on the floor and/or as an addition to their chair. The chair bands are also a good way to provide for students' needs without distracting the rest of the class. I would use flexible seating during various activities, such as whole group time, guided instruction, and even during independent work, like centers/rotations.
They deserve an appropriate way to meet their sensory and high energy needs while simultaneously supporting their focus and their sense of comfort.
Flexible seating benefits the entire class by giving everyone a choice in how they learn, while also supporting those with challenges. First graders are fidgety, and instead of creating limitations, it's important to me as their teacher to give them an appropriate outlet for their natural and age appropriate behavior and needs.
