My students are some of the most kind, helpful, and generous kids I know. They will spend their free time helping other peers in the class or even offering to be of assistance to me. With that being said, my students LOVE to work in groups or with a partner.
We have a long afternoon of 3 back-to-back hours of core classroom instruction and so it is vital for students to take brain breaks and get up from their seats.
Most of my students, when given the opportunity, continuously ask to “work around the room”. This means, that they will find a quiet place to work in the room where they can take a break from sitting at their desk. Also, when working with small groups, or partners, students enjoy leaving their desk and finding another place in the room to work together more productively.
Getting out of their seats, and “working around the room”, provides a comfortable seating option for a majority of my students. It also provides a chance for students to be collaborative, laugh, and share their love for learning.
My Project
This grant will provide students with wobble chairs that offer up an additional seating option for students who enjoy moving while working. Having flexible seating options in a classroom allows a student to choose where he/she would like to sit during independent work time. The students have the opportunity to move around the room and work in a place that best suits their learning needs.
With the flexible seating options I already provide in the room, I have noticed a large difference in student engagement.
The product I have chosen provides another opportunity for students to engage in collaboration and simply have a chance to get the wiggles out throughout the day. Research has proven that any additional movement, that is paired with instruction, helps students retain information better. Regular chairs can provide discomfort for students, but wiggle seats allow for students to have the movement they need and crave throughout the day.
I strive to instill the love of learning in my students and this additional seating option, that is easy to move around the room, is the perfect opportunity for students to enjoy their learning. I want this additional option for seating, and the opportunity of choice, to enhance the classroom environment my flexible seating currently provides.
