I teach at a Title 1 public elementary school in San Francisco, California with 90% of our students qualifying for free and reduced-price lunch. As a school community, we are working to keep up the high quality of education and school experience with much fewer resources. When asked what keeps me teaching and motivated at my school site, I always say it is because of the students and their families. My students come from hard-working, immigrant families that are trying to build a better life for themselves. Many have endured personal hardships, from lack of affordable housing in San Francisco to adjusting to living in a new country.
My students are eager to learn and I aim to help them be critical and engaged community members.
With this in mind, I strive for my students to have the best learning environment possible so they can experience success and continue to develop a love of learning.
My Project
I am trying to replace my 20+ year old classroom desk and chairs for a comfortable and cozy flexible seating arrangement. Research shows that flexible seating increases student engagement, motivation, and collaboration. I want my students to be able to focus and make choices to better their learning, and know that those choices directly affect their success. My students are active learners and need active furniture to support their learning styles.
With your donation, I will be able to offer students a variety of seating options based on what best meets their needs.
We need wobble stools, a new rug for reading and whole/small group lessons, and floor cushions for students who prefer to sit on the floor. I am looking forward to creating a positive learning environment and provide my fifth graders with a variety of flexible seating options to help them focus and learn.
