Flexible Seating for Fabulous Fifth Graders

My students need flexible seating options so that all learners have a greater opportunity for academic, physical, and emotional success!

My Students

I teach at a Title I elementary school, which means that our building has qualified for financial assistance due to a high population of low-income families. This past year, our district departmentalized at the elementary level for grades four and five. I am teaching English Language Arts (ELA) to approximately forty fifth graders. My students have a wide range of academic, physical and emotional needs.

My students would greatly benefit from the latest educational trend of student-centered flexible seating options within the classroom.

When the class is not collectively engaged in a mini-lesson, the students have many opportunities for independent work, peer collaboration, small group support, and guided instruction. The students love having opportunities to leave their seats, and work in other areas of the classroom.

Studies show that flexible seating is not a passing trend like the maddening fidget-spinners, and that there are academic, physical and behavioral benefits to providing students with seating options. I believe that my classroom would be an even more successful reading and writing workshop if my students could have the ability to choose the seating that best supports their needs.

My Project

"Every student can learn - just not on the same day or in the same way." - George Evans. This quote has always resonated with me, and I try to keep these words in mind when planning my instruction. All children are capable of learning - it is my responsibility to provide them with the tools that will help them succeed.

I believe that flexible seating options will positively impact the academic, physical, and emotional success of my fabulous fifth graders.

Studies have proven that there are multiple benefits to including flexible seating options within the classroom. We live in a world full of choices, so it is important to provide students with opportunities for choice at an early age. Students can flex their metacognitive muscles as they explore what seating options will be best for their personal engagement. We all know that an uncomfortable student is an unproductive and distracted student. By choosing the seating that is most comfortable, students will more than likely exhibit increased motivation as well as greater engagement.

Additionally, nearly all of the flexible seating options that I have requested require the use of core strength or provide students with sensory input. By stimulating muscles and/or a sense of touch, many students will demonstrate improved focus and processing.

Finally, flexible seating will help to strengthen the overall classroom community which will create a fun and stress-free learning environment. These shared resources will allow students to collaborate more comfortably and move more freely within our classroom space. Not only will students recognize what seating is best for them, but I believe they will also become more compassionate of the needs of others.

I am confident that more flexible seating options will truly have a positive impact on my fabulous fifth grade students.
