My students need 3 KOBE Wobble chairs with antimicrobial protection, 6 Balance Ball chairs, 3 Stability Wobble cushions, and 3 portable desks in order to have a creative, unique, and flexible seating classroom.
My students are energized, curious, and a diverse group of 7th graders in a large urban school in Denver. These young learners enter my science classroom with an eagerness to jump into experiments, ask questions, and collaborate with peers. Our school has made a recent push to the digital classroom and all students now have one-to-one technology.
In a large and diverse school, it is easy for many of my learners to become stuck in the same routine of moving effortlessly from class to class.
Many of my students do not see school as inviting, but rather see the rigid structure and dread sitting for many hours staring at computer screens all day.
My hope is to create a flexible and creative classroom environment that is just as unique as each and every one of my students. A place where all students can bring their energy to the classroom and participate meaningfully in student led projects, discussion, research, and work to solve real-world problems.
In large urban schools where many families are faced with poverty, school supplies and classroom environment resources are often forgotten or not affordable. In our middle school, students are forced to use broken chairs, old and worn out tables, and sit through multiple 75 minute classes in a row.
Middle school should be a time for student choice, engagement, excitement, growth, and collaboration; a time to develop life long learners.
The conditions of our school system do not promote creativity, movement, or student engagement. Teachers try their best to create lessons that increase all of these, but without the correct materials it is not possible.
My project will transform my classroom into a flexible learning space that will fit the needs of the diverse learners I have in my classroom. The wobble stools, balance ball chairs, wobble cushions, and portable desks will allow students to choose how they want to engage in their learning.
My students enter my classroom excited, eager, and ready to dive into science and with these flexible seating options I cannot wait to see how collaboration, autonomy, student voice, and inquiry increase dramatically!
