I’m starting the school year in a new district and new school and I would love to provide the opportunity for flexible seating for my new little Busy Bees. My classroom this year is very small but I will have 22 students. I have had to get very creative in my set up and flexible seating will allow my room to feel more open. My school is over 20 years old and hasn’t received any new furniture. First graders do not need to be sitting behind big bulky desks so I have decided to remove all of them and provide some tables of various heights as well as floor space for students to work on.
My Project
The classroom has turned into a space where students should feel comfortable both mentally and physically to learn. Providing these variety of flexible seating choices, while still maintaining some traditional choices in the classroom, will help me meet the needs of all of my students. I’m sure we all remember the days where we were stuck behind a desk feeling antsy or falling asleep as the teacher stood at the front of the room “teaching.” These days have long gone! First graders are full of energy and need movement. I would like to provide a table with wobble chairs for those students that need to wiggle in their seats while working. I would also like to have CanDo Ball ergonomic friendly seats at my small group table. They will provide the comfort of an exercise ball with the back support of a chair. Lastly, I want to see some comfortable floor seating for those that would prefer to work on the floor and I believe that the Flex-Space Comfy Floor Seat will provide the students the comfort of a floor seat while still providing back support when sitting up. Providing different types of seating choices not only will help with their physical and mental needs but is empowering! I want to provide them with the gift of choice!
