Help me give my students a variety of seating with bean bags and wobble chairs and a space to gather as a class for morning meeting and story time on the ABC rug.
I teach at a public elementary school in a suburb of Detroit. My students are in a K-2 cross categorical special education classroom, which encompasses students with a variety of behavioral, sensory, cognitive, and developmental disabilities. All of my students are 5 and 6 years old, an age at which children learn their ABC's, numbers, colors, and shapes along with writing and important social skills. On top of everything else, my kindergarteners are adjusting to a full day of activity. As their teacher, along with our team of educators and their parents each student has an individual education plan implemented in the classroom to help them grow and meet goals specific to their needs.
In order to engage a classroom with such varied needs, we seek out materials that will provide hands on, visual, sensory and developmental tools for teaching.
My students require a personal space within the classroom for cool down and solo work. They also benefit from a comfortable space for shared activities that will foster communication skills, sharing and play.
My Project
The wobbly chairs enable active students who have difficulty remaining seated in regular chairs to stay at their desk to work while in movement. The bean bag chairs, on the other hand, are helpful in calming students if they need to take a break from the active classroom. Our ABC rug would create the opportunity for the class to come together as a whole to share morning meeting, story time, and other group lessons in a designated space.
With flexible seating, students are able to move around while remaining part of the classroom community; my wish list is designed to provide just that!
