My students come from all over the world; dozens of languages are spoken in our school. As 12 and 13 year olds, my seventh graders love to learn about the real world and connect that learning to themselves and the fiction they read in ELA class. The students are thirsty for knowledge and discussion of current events, politics, and the environment. They are in the middle of the challenging and necessary process of making sense of themselves and the world around them.
Seventh grade is a time when kids are deciding who they are, and whether school is important to them.
In my classroom, it is our goal to build a strong, diverse, respectful community of learners and human beings.
My Project
Every day in ELA class, students are engaged in all different kinds of learning: reading, writing, discussing, creating. We know that one mode of learning doesn't work for every kid, and neither does one type of learning environment. Some kids thrive sitting at a desk, while other kids feel anxious and trapped.
Students with disabilities and students with trauma history especially benefit from flexible seating; the ability to move freely can be a true game changer for some kids' comfort and ability to learn.
Students feel valued and seen, and are able to spend more time focused on their work, building their confidence and commitment to our community.
By investing in flexible seating options, we are able to make a classroom feel like home, while also giving students more tools to take control of their own learning.
