My students are amazing, and they deserve the absolute best! I teach middle school social studies to students who have emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). At Rutland Academy we provide educational and therapeutic support services to public school students who might otherwise require residential or other more restrictive placements due to the severity of their disability. My students are bright, extremely talented, and very capable of learning grade level content. More than a third of my students are from low‑income households.
My Project
Many of my students are active and need to move, rock, bounce, and lean in order to stay alert and focused. Movement increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain and physical activity has been linked to higher academic performance.
My students feel empowered when they have flexible seating options and this directly improves their ability to learn, stay focused, and collaborate.
Desks are not ideal for a collaborative classroom where students need to pair up or work in small groups. Flexible seating helps to foster collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.
My students would be so excited to have more options for seating in the classroom.
