Kindergarten days are jam-packed with learning everything from letters to numbers, to sight words to basic addition, and how to read. There is so much learning to do and it is my job as an educator to ensure that all of my students are able to do their best learning, while also building a love for school.
My students are eager to learn so they can reach their dreams of being dentists, astronauts and authors.
It is my job as their teacher to ensure they are getting all of their needs met, physically, academically and emotionally to ensure they are ready to learn and continue on their journey toward reaching their goals!
As a public charter school, we have students attending from Minneapolis as well as a number of surrounding communities. Our school focuses on creating a space that meets the needs of all learners, enabling them to think and act in a way that will help them become agents of change in their community.
My Project
We have 24 students in our kindergarten classroom, many who are new to school... and in a very small classroom. With the limited amount of space and many students' needs to accommodate, we are looking to create a classroom environment where students feel welcome and know they are able to be their best selves.
These seating options will optimize student learning while accommodating a 5-year-old's active body.
We will be able to engage students' core with the wobble and yoga ball chairs, keeping their bodies moving while their minds are at work. The yoga ball chairs will also provide a double dose of accommodation as students are able to choose if they want to be in a chair, or just use the yoga ball to do their best learning.
During each activity, students will have the opportunity to choose which seating option is best for their learning. This autonomy and ability to make choices will allow students to be accountable for what is truly best for their learning, but also allow students the space to advocate for what they need to do their best work.
