This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are very special. Many of them come to my school because they need a different way of "doing" education. Technically, my school is known as an alternative school which comes with its own connotation. Usually, when people hear the word "alternative" they think our students lack motivation or that they may have other "issues" as to why they couldn't make it in a more traditional school setting.
However, my students are amazing!
Despite the adversities they face in their daily lives and whatever reasons that they arrived at my school, they steadily push through. Many of my students are parents, live independently, and have jobs, but they want to learn. They want to be respected, and they want to be loved. I admire their continued strength and their focus to graduate, and I am fully committed to serving each of them according to their individual needs.
My Project
Coming back from a year of virtual learning has been an adjustment for everyone, especially students. Face masks are the norm. Talking behind plexiglass is nothing unusal. Having weekly testing that interrupts class time is expected. All around it's been hard, just like it's hard sitting at a traditional desk for 7 hours a day.
As an educator, I try to think of new ways to rethink education, and flexible seating is on my top priority list.
While some may think students should sit in rows facing the board as a teacher lectures, I feel that human beings learn when they are comfortable and able to move around and converse as they would at home or with friends. Incorporating flexible seating will provide a space for students to be more alert and focused. It will encourage collaboration, community, and ultimately prepare students for the real world.
I want my students to have a different attitude towards learning and the classroom overall. Flexible seating helps make learning fun. The benefits far outweigh any negatives and reflect real life.
