Help me give my students the opportunity to learn using flexible seating options such as standing desks, bean bag chairs, lap desks and bouncy chair bands for their desks.
I work at an urban high school in Connecticut teaching mathematics. This year, I teach two co-taught Algebra 1 classes (with a special Education teacher), an EL Geometry class (co-taught with an EL Teacher), an Accelerated Algebra 1 class and a Foundations Everyday Algebra 1 class that is co taught with another Math Teacher. I teach students with a variety of different backgrounds and learning needs. Half of my students come from low income households.
My students are inquisitive, hardworking and enthusiastic learners with a variety of learning needs.
I try to make my classroom a warm environment where all students feel accepted and supported so that they will feel engaged and ready to learn. I also run a homework club on Thursdays so that students have a safe and quiet place to go to complete homework or receive additional support in subjects that they are having trouble in.
My Project
Students in my class have a variety of learning needs. The items that I chose for my DonorsChoose.org project will help my students by providing the flexible seating options that will help them be successful during class. Students tend to perform better when they are in an environment that is comfortable for them. I chose to include two bean bag chairs, standing desks, lap desks, chair pads and bouncy chair bands in my project because these are items that I believe my students can use within the classroom to be more comfortable throughout the class time. Classes at my school are 84 minutes long. Many of my students are diagnosed with conditions such as ADHD.
These items will help the students concentrate in class and ultimately will help them understand class material better.
I also chose to include a pencil sharpener in my project because the current pencil sharpener in my classroom does not always work well and it takes a long time for students to be able to sharpen their pencil. Sometimes, we can not get the pencils to sharpen at all. This electric pencil sharpener will help students learn better because it will give them a tool to be able to sharpen their pencils faster and get back to class faster.
