Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I public elementary school in California, among a group of educators, innovating, and serving both the academic and social-emotional growth of a high needs, diverse community.
Working with my group of 33 phenomenal students I have learned kids are kids - no matter their upbringing - eager to learn, full of energy, creative, and curious.
I teach a fourth/fifth grade combination class. The majority of my students are fourth graders, but I also have two fifth graders. I have two special education students who attend my class for ¾ of the school day. I also have a child with dyslexia who receives supplementary supports, and five newcomers to the U.S. - these children are English language learners, and several are students with interrupted formal education.
My students love to build and design during constructive, free choice - Genius Hour. They also enjoy playing new games and sports in P.E. My students are eager for Field Trips, often hungry, and sometimes in need of clothing. Each one of my students is a contender - supplies are limited - and the more I can give them the more I am sure they will grow!
My Project
I have organized my classroom into 5 pods of desks to accommodate my 33 students. In addition, I have a teacher desk, a 1/2 circle table so that I can pull small groups and provide individualized instruction, a class library, and a supply table - it's cramped! All of the furniture in my classroom is recycled - either found in the classroom when I arrived, or I salvaged the furniture at second hand stores and yard sales.
Wobble stools will keep my energetic students moving as they study in our crowded classroom, while also freeing up space, as they can slip easily under the 1/2 circle table.
My students are bright, enthusiastic and eager to learn! I believe this flexible seating allows them to work in an environment that adapts to their own learning styles - at a sitting or standing desk, on a rug with a pillow, or wobbling on a stool.
