This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every student in my class stands out in their own way! Our school is located on the West side of Chicago. Although some of the students have difficult home lives, our classroom is a safe haven for them. They know that they can share, learn and be themselves in our classroom. I strive to implement strategies that will positively engage the students in order to temporarily remove any negative thoughts that may arise due to circumstances outside of my control. I want them to feel comfortable thinking outside of the box for at least 6 hours per day!
My Project
My fourth grade students are an energetic group of learners! They are quite antsy and require constant movement. Although I engage them in dancing and exercising throughout the day between lessons, we are in dire need of more flexible seating options such as drafting stools and exercise balls, that will help maintain their engagement during our academic lessons.
In many of their other classes, the students must sit in traditional seats that do not allow for movement.
The students tend to misbehave due to constant sitting. Students get bored with the same learning environment just as adults do. Our class is a place where movement is encouraged! With only 3 exercise balls currently available to students in my class, we still face the similar behavior challenges of traditional classrooms. Flexible seating is a great way to complete our quest to incorporate a fun environment with fun learning activities daily. We like to think outside of the box!
