This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Passionate, inventive, and motivated are just a few words to describe my 28 first-grade students at my elementary school in Decatur, Georgia. Each day, students enter the classroom with a smile, ready to learn, and anxious to see what new activities or tools are available for exploration.
Classroom relationships and building community is a central focus in our first-grade classroom.
All students are encouraged to make suggestions, solve problems, share ideas, as well as serve as important decision-makers. Every student in my classroom has a unique voice and everyone in the room must respect it.
Overall, I view creating community as essential to taking risks and deeper learning. I care about kids and they know it. Taking the time to know my students well, not just as learners, but also as people have helped to create a real sense of belonging in our shared space. No matter the obstacles they face outside the class, they strive to be the best they can be every single day.
My Project
Hello! My name is Mrs. Gillespie and I am a first grade teacher in Decatur, Georgia! I am currently working on creating more flexible seating for my 1st grade classroom. Currently we have 2 beanbags on our carpet area, which is shared and utilized by my students during independent work time. The students ABSOLUTELY love independent work time; but even more, they LOVE being able to hang out on the beanbags and enjoy a good book. I am asking for more flexible seating, so that more than two students can work in comfort during reading/ELA/math centers. My grant comprises of over-sized floor pillows, as well as "sit pillows" for my students to use during work periods. I have also included art to add to the decor of my room.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.
Additionally, the physical environment (art & decor) adds positive energy to the classroom, giving it a home-y feel. Thank you so much for helping me support my wonderful students in their learning and physical well-being!
