I teach at an elementary school made up of students from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Many students come from low-income families and qualify for free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Most students are English Language Learners. Although many of the students face financial hardships at home, they come to school excited to learn new things.
I try my best to ensure that students are coming to a comfortable, happy classroom environment each day and that they have access to engaging material all year long.
I am moving from teaching 5th grade to 1st grade next school year. I am excited to start my students on their learning journey and my primary goal is to foster their love of reading!
My Project
My goal is to provide a learning environment for my students that will engage them and help them succeed. First graders are working toward becoming fluent readers and I would like to provide them with the comfortable environment they need to do that. A flexible seating classroom gives students the opportunity to choose what type of learning space best meets their needs.
Students in my classroom will be able to choose a comfortable space to work, which will lead to more focus and productivity.
The wobble stools, balance balls, and wobble seat cushions allow students to move around a little as they work without distracting themselves or others. These options keep students' bodies active and the movement increases blood flow to the brain, which will improve concentration.
I have also selected products for my students to work on in their chosen work space that will improve their literacy skills. The alphabet linking cubes, stamps, and magnets will give my first graders the opportunity to work on word-building with hands-on materials. The book bins I have included will allow students to easily carry their "just-right" books with them to their comfortable learning space in the room. I am eager to see students free from their confined desk spaces and excited to see flexible seating in action this school year!
