My students need the adjustable work station and chairs allow students to work anywhere with freedom to collaborate, work in any location including outside, and have far more choice and comfort.
My students are entering their first year of our community middle school and over 65% of them are considered to be in poverty as shown through our free and reduced lunch statistics. Middle school tends to be the time when students become frustrated and disaffected, partly due to the fact that school does not reflect their real lives. Traditional desks and chairs set up in rows shuts down creativity and students are neither happy or excited about learning. When my students have choice and a certain level of comfort they visibly light up and are excited about being at school.
My Project
The easily moveable nature of the desks and chairs allows students to manipulate the physical set up of the classroom on a minute by minute basis depending on the individual needs of students. As a math and science teacher it is very important to create a welcoming environment as many students struggle with and have anxiety around their math skills.
When students have the ability to quickly and easily change their working environment it allows for more choice, collaboration, and ownership.
The desks and chairs will promotes a creative and inclusive environment in the classroom and can positively impact students' perceptions about learning.
