Help me give my students flexible seating options that will accomdate their learning needs that includes stability balls and bar height tables and stools.
My students come from two, small, rural communities in South Mobile County. The majority of the families work in the seafood and agricultural industries.
My students have had to overcome adversities from Hurricane Katrina and the BP Oil Spill.
Both disasters affected their families emotionally and especially financially. But they continue to persevere through hard work and determination.
Most of my students are very hands-on, and aproximately one-forth of my students receive learning accomodations. Our current desks don't allow for collaboration groups or learning centers. Plus, my students hate our classroom desks because they are too small. Many twelfth-graders squeeze into desks that were constructed for middle school students.
I believe my students would benefit greatly from flexible seating. Some students need to stand while working. Some students fidget and need to be moving. And some students just like having options.
My classroom philosophy is simple: The room belongs to the students, and it should convey a feeling condusive with learning.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. Allowing senior students to choose a location in the classroom that works for them is just a small way of letting them have a voice in their education. Some of my students require accomodations for learning. These include: the abilty to move, the option to stand, and the need to work with another student. The current desks in the classroom do not accomodate these needs. Also, these desks were designed for middle school students, but due to a shortage in school funds, we were given what was available.
Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.
I have done extensive research in creating flexible seating in the classroom and all of my research shows that students are more activiely engaged in the learning process when the classroom has a comfortable vibe.
The products that I have selected will be a good start to transforming my classroom. The yoga ball chairs will help those that need to move and will be seating for a round table I have designated for collaborative learning. The bar height table and stools will be perfect for those students who need to stand at some point in our 88 minute block. Plus, it will be a positive change to the atmosphere of the room.
These items are not just furniture for a classroom. These items will be used as tools to enhance the learning of my students.
