Flexible Seating: Creating Student Engagement and Collaboration!
My students need active sitting options designed to provide them enhanced ergonomic support, comfort, mobility, raising student engagement and success.
I teach in a one of two schools of choice in my district, in which students must apply and be accepted. All courses are taught at the honors/AP level, are rigorous, and designed to produce college-ready graduates. All the teachers are highly motivated and are constantly pushing the students to their potential or beyond. I feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work in this extraordinary environment, surrounded by dedicated students and staff.
As a teacher of Social Studies, the educational philosophy that guides my instruction is as follows: students learn most effectively when they are engaged in collaborative discussion, exchange of ideas, and student-lead teamwork, putting them and their peers at the center of the learning experience, instead of the instructor.
Having students lead and dominate the conversations we have is vital for them to make connections and meaning of the material. The beneficial skills they will develop through the collaborative process will also help them become effective contributors to both academic and professional environments they'll encounter in the future.
My Project
I am so very fortunate to be able to work with amazing students every day. Unfortunately, I often witness them fidgeting in their seat, struggling to find comfort and ease. Giving students options for how and where they sit, implementing seating tools like ball chairs and rolling desks will allow them to work in a manner that is relaxing, inviting, and ultimately stimulating to discussion, collaboration, and achievement. Think about it: would you work well sitting in a hard plastic chair, squeezed into a rigid wooden desk for 6 hours a day? I know I work best when I am comfortable and unencumbered. I know my students will to! Thank you for your help and support
