My students live in the poorest county in Florida. We historically have had a sixty to seventy percent graduation rate. Many students view school with animosity and resent having to come sit in uncomfortable desks and chairs while listening to lecture after lectures. I aim to break the cycle and change students perception of school and learning.
Flexible seating options provide students with a positive, student-friendly, student-centered learning environment.
By creating a welcoming environment, I make strides toward not only keeping students comfortable but in fostering a positive teacher-student and school-student mindset.
Current research shows that flexible seating allows students to exercise free choice in the classroom, reduces classroom disruptions and behavioral problems, promotes problem-solving, and fosters collaboration and community.
Flexible seating allows students to have a sense of autonomy in what is all too often a cookie cutter environment.
This purchase would allow my students to have the option of sitting at a traditional desk or a desk with a band, using a chair and a lap desk, using an exercise ball chair and table or lap desk, using a bean bag chair or sitting at a cocktail table on a stool. The additional choices not only allow students freedom of choice and expression, but many of the options allow students to fidget and expend extra energy.
