Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a low-income/high poverty area, and many of them are from immigrant families. These student are often in charge of taking care of their younger siblings and have more responsibilities than your average middle school student. They face challenges both in and outside of school. Many of them do not have technology in their households to meet the needs of the ever-evolving classroom and world around them. That being said, they are still a huge inspiration to me every day. Because of my students, I am learning to be more patient, to be kind, selfless, and composed.
When in my classroom, I want my students to feel safe and comfortable by having consistent expectations and routines.
I teach ELA and many of my student read below grade level. They are reluctant to read and feel uncomfortable when they are required to read in class. By adding flexible seating options to my classroom, I want them to increase their comfort level when it comes to in class reading.
My Project
I am requesting a set of 5 calming pillows for creating flexible seating in my classroom. I want to create comfortable reading spaces throughout my classroom to encourage reluctant readers to become more comfortable with independent reading.
I am starting small in changing my classroom over to flexible seating, but I think it will make a world of difference for my middle school students.
These pillows will allow them to get comfortable while doing in class reading and independent work. It will also allow them to take ownership of their learning because when they are comfortable in the classroom, their minds expand!
