My students need a variety of National Geographic readers for additional nonfiction books in the library. They also utilize active learning stools, wobble cushions and bouncy bands for additional flexible seating options for students to choose from.
All children should have the same opportunities as their peers. Students at-risk often don't receive them, especially those who face learning disabilities. These students are fully capable of learning and understanding grade-level concepts. However, they just learn differently.
My students all come from a diverse town in northern Virginia.
Many of my students come from single family homes and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Currently, I teach students in a resource room as a fifth grade teacher.
My Project
The most important thing that I have learned the last seven years as a teacher is allowing students to engage in choice. These choices are offered in academic and environmental settings. Allowing my students to make choices gives them an opportunity to build independent life skills.
My classroom environment is one which allows for my students to take risks and be comfortable with participating in discussion.
My students have excess energy that often impedes on their learning. I want to create a classroom where my students will be able to be active, while learning and completing their assignments. This is easier said than done, because the trick is to not distract others that aren't being active and to allow my students to decrease their brain breaks and small "tasks" that take away from their overall learning.
We need a variety of National Geographic readers for additional nonfiction books in the library. They also utilize active learning stools, wobble cushions and bouncy bands for additional flexible seating options for students to choose from. By having flexible seating such as wobble chairs and bouncy bands, my students will be able to concentrate on what is expected of them, because they will be able to move around without actually leaving their seats. In addition, the chair ball and sit and move cushions will allow my students to move around the room to work in an area that they know will allow them to do their best work.
These flexible seating options and assortment of nonfiction books will continue to build my students to become lifelong and independent learners. I am excited to allow for new opportunities which promote a community of engaged and active learners.
