Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is the first and most advanced school designed to meet the unique needs of children in the foster care and child welfare systems in New York City.
Two-thirds of our seats are reserved for children who are "child-welfare involved." The school prides itself in integrating social services and a trauma-sensitive curriculum into an educational program for these children who are either in foster care or receiving preventative services.
Many of our scholars have made several transitions in and out of foster homes. The lack of stability at home, combined with histories of trauma, abuse, or neglect, make our scholars the most vulnerable children in New York City.
My Project
My goal is to ensure my students are comfortable within the classroom which is an essential component in learning. Providing flexible seating for students allows them to take charge of their learning. During times when we are working on reading or writing projects, my kids have the option of sitting on the carpet in small groups, but sitting on the rug can be difficult when they need to lean over to write on clipboards.
The surf lap desks I have selected will help my students not only by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices, but will also by allowing students the option to sit at a desk with the comfort of the rug.
This will replace the need for clipboards while providing added comfort within the classroom. The surf lap desks are lightweight and can be easily used within many areas of the classroom.
