Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At my school, where I teach 7th grade Language Arts and Social Studies, there is a growing number of classrooms incorporating a flexible seating model. My school has a diverse population with half of the students coming from low‑income households. According to greatschools.org, "Test scores for low-income students at this school fall below the state average for all students." According to greatschools.org, "Students here perform about average on state tests, are making about average year-over-year academic improvement, and this school has below average results in how well it’s serving disadvantaged students."
Providing more students with the additional accommodations that flexible seating provides would inevitably result in greater student achievement.
My Project
Thanks to DonorsChoose.org, I have been able to be a part of the "flexible seating" movement at my school. Last year, I was able to purchase yoga balls, "wobble chairs" and office-style task chairs. My students are so motivated by these types of alternative seating that they've requested more options!
In all of the surveys that I have conducted with my former students, office-style task chairs, which I have found on Amazon Business at a reasonable price, have been the most requested option!
Because of limited funding for public schools, teachers such as myself and my colleagues have used their own money and have relied upon fundraising sources such as DonorsChoose.org to build a better classroom!
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. As stated above, these office chairs are the most popular choice among my students, so the more of them that I have, more students will benefit.
They are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom.
I have seen how choice can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
