Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school in the Bronx. This year I will be teaching a second grade Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) class, which means that my class will consist of general education students, special education students, and English language learners. So far I have 27 students; 12 of them are classified special education students. My students' families work hard to provide for them, often working multiple jobs just to afford necessities. One hundred percent of the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students often live in small apartments or in crowded homeless shelters where they don't have the comforts of their own space.
This is why it is important that they feel like their classroom is their second home.
I try my best to provide a safe, comfortable environment where students can feel at home. I think it's important for students to be able to take ownership of their learning, and in order to do that, school needs to be a safe place where they want to be. I want my students to be successful despite any problems they may face at home. School should be a place where kids can be kids.
My Project
Since we will have a class of up to 32 students who all learn in different ways, we need to have flexible seating options to fit the needs of those learners.
Not every child learns best sitting on hard chairs at their desks.
We need area rugs and pillows so students can have comfortable places around the room to read and learn instead of on the cold tile floor, and wobble chairs and bouncy bands to help energetic students focus that energy on learning.
These students deserve a classroom that feels like home. Please help me make my classroom their second home!
