The world of a special education classroom is unlike any other classroom in a school. My middle school students go through the same challenges, both mentally and physically, that all of their typical peers go through as well as the challenges added by their various exceptionalities. I teach at a Title I school in Odenville, AL where we set goals to make everyday better for our students. Our school consists of about 487 6th-8th grade students with approximately 56% of students on our free or reduced lunch program.
In my classroom I strive to create an environment where my students feel comfortable, bring their best attitudes, and feel encouraged to do their best work.
My classroom specifically, consists of 8 amazing students with varying exceptionalities. Each student works on a different level academically and requires most instruction in a one-to-one or small group setting. Each day, I focus on their individual goals, reading, and math and try to incorporate life skills that they will need throughout their lives.
My Project
When I think back to when I was in school and how long each day I had to spend sitting in an uncomfortable desk, it helps me begin to understand why my students have trouble sitting still and focused for longer periods of time. Flexible seating has become a BIG thing in classrooms these days and it is backed by an abundance of success stories, all of which include an increase in focus and decrease in many negative behavior problems.
For my students specifically, flexible seating is GREAT for sensory output which is especially helpful for those students with ASD, ADHD, and ADD.
When given the choice, movement, comfort, and sense of community that comes with flexible seating I feel my students will not only thrive in my classroom, but they will LOVE coming to school every day. This project is strictly a focus on seating options and items that my student's will use each day. I have chosen a variety of seating options that range from a high top table and chairs to a comfy bean bag and butterfly seats as well as other options. My students are constantly wanting to sit in my rolling chair or in the single rocking chair we have in class and are far more engaged when I allow them to do so.
Being able to give my students these options will bring a whole new feel to my classroom and I can't wait to give the gift of choice and flexibility to my students!
