Flexible Seating: Changing the Learning Environment

Flexible seating options help students discover how they best learn and complete tasks.

My students have a genuine thirst for knowledge.

In third grade, students are like sponges, ready to soak up all that we give them. I teach a regular education classroom. Students at this age are incredibly curious. They have short attention spans. Some students have difficulty staying focused for more than 10 minutes or they just need to be able to move some while learning.

My Project

I began implementing flexible seating three years ago based on research stating that not all students learn the same way. I began by simply changing desk heights. It didn't take long for me to realize that the research was spot on. My students were able to stand, sit at a regular desk, or even a desk that was lowered, whatever helped them to focus more.

Allowing students the freedom to choose their seating made them take ownership in their learning.

At this age, they are still investigating what works best for them. My students feel comfortable and safe in my classroom. When students feel safe, they are more willing to try new things and take chances with their learning.

Flexible seating has completely changed the culture in my classroom. The students and myself are calmer, we have more interactions, and we are truly a family. Adding more options will continue to foster this new culture.
