Flexible Seating Changed My Classroom and Increased Student Engagment
My students need flexible seating to allow them choice in the classroom. Each seating choice offers the students the ability to work in a comfortable area that meets their needs.
Every day, I get the wonderful opportunity to touch the minds and hearts of my students. I believe in a classroom environment that fosters learning, friendships, laughs, imagination, collaboration, and a safe place to make mistakes. I strive to create an environment that allows students to reach their full potential.
I teach in a very high performing school, that has a diverse population.
Meeting the needs of my students on every level is important to me. My students come from all different cultural and economic backgrounds. One thing they have in common is their desire to learn.
My school is one that fosters the inquisitive nature of our students. Building relationships with our students and community allows us to create life long learners that believe in reaching their fullest potential.
My Project
My 14th year in teaching was one of change and excitement. I changed my third grade classroom into a totally flexible seating classroom.
Students were able to collaborate with peers and their level of engagement increased.
Students were allowed to choose the seat on the floor with an arm pillow or wobble on a wobble stool. They loved the stability balls and gaming chair. I would love to add some more seating choices in our classroom.
In this project I have chosen beanbags that allow a comfortable spot on the floor. The stability chairs will be added to allow students movement during learning. Students with ADHD and other learning disabilities need the opportunity to move during learning. The stability ball chairs and the gaming rocker allow students to have suttle movments while working. This allows their attention to stay on their work.
I would love to add more choices into our classroom. I have at 42 students between my homeroom and switch class. These new seats will offer additional seating needed for students in our classroom.
