My students need flexible seating options. That may be a pillow, wobble chair, or a balance ball. They also need quiet spaces for reading, like a teepee.
This year I am taking on a K/1 combo, with about half and half of each grade. Before this, I taught three years in a straight 1st grade. In teaching first grade I learned that each child that comes into my classroom with individual and unique needs. Students can be non-readers, or expert readers. Students can be math geniuses, or still counting with their fingers and toes.
The best part of being a teacher is making those unique connections with each student.
You learn all about the child, what makes them tick, and how to motivate them the best. By the end of the year, you see how much growth they have made and it warms your heart. My biggest take away from my first three years of teaching is that students like to feel comfortable. Whether that be with the teacher, peers, or in the classroom. Providing comfort enables students to learn, struggle, and make mistakes. In making mistakes, students learn.
Gone are the days of students sitting in an uncomfortable chair in a single desk doing the same thing as every other student. Students need options. Some students learn best by laying on the ground, or sitting on a pillow. Some students need a desk or a table, while others need to lean up against a wall. The one thing in common in every situation mentioned above is that it is the students' choice and the most comfortable choice for that student.
Students learn best in a place they are comfortable.
With my 5-7 year old students, many aren't used to the confines of a chair and desk. I let my students find the best position for them to learn. When was the last time you enjoyed a book on a metal chair and cold, hard table? Can you read with lots of people around and noises? Flexible seating builds motivation and allows for student success, while also allowing for students to spread out in the classroom and find a suitable space for learning.
