My students need cube chairs, wobble seats, and lap boards. They will utilize these tools around the room during guided instruction and independent work. These seating options will allow them to stay focused and engaged.
I teach fifth grade Math and Science to a total of 42 students split between two rotating classes. My classes are inclusive of all students. I teach a wide range of pupils, who require a multitude of additional resources and services in and outside of the classroom. Out of my homeroom of 20 students, 14 of them receive Exceptional Student Education Services. These services range anywhere from speech / language support and occupational therapy, to additional academic and behavioral interventions.
Although my students struggle at times, they are some of the hardest working kiddos I have ever encountered.
My Class knows that they need to work hard in order to succeed. However, our room is full of students who all require their own set of tools and resources to bloom. I teach my students that they need to be self advocates and they are required to take responsibility for their own learning day in and day out.
So far they have proven this strategy to be successful and we are continuing to grow and set the bar high for future classes.
My Project
Changing the physical space of the classroom directly affects student behavior and learning outcomes. Allowing my students to sit where they are most comfortable warrants for more focus and engagement to occur during our Math and Science lessons.
Not only does flexible seating require my students to remain engaged and focused, it also implores them to maintain control over their own learning and the environment in which it takes place.
Students can use cube ottomans as seating around small group tables and at their personal desks for differentiated height levels. Lapboards can be brought around the room to ensure comfort when using Chromebooks and taking notes during independent and group work. Biblbo rocking seats and fidget bands are great for students who need to move in order to work effectively without being a distraction to others. Additionally, studies suggest that sitting on yoga balls may help improve student's focus and aide them in writing more clearly. When a student's body is engaged, their brain is too!
Students will feel empowered and can be held accountable for their learning and education. This will teach them how to maintain a working environment that best fits their individual needs.
