Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are creative, insightful and inquisitive! They absolutely love challenging and engaging work that allows them to show how complex their thinking can be! They come to school each day with grit and motivation in order to grow both personally and academically. They are an amazing bunch!

Our school is located in the heart of Oakcliff (South Dallas), in a community with lots of spirit.

In this area, many families often struggle with poverty, unemployment, underemployment and lack of opportunity, however they want the best for their children and it shows. No matter what challenges these kids face, they show up ready to succeed!

The method and environment in which my students learn best varies greatly from child to child. We incorporate a variety of academic strategies, stations work, and alternative seating options to ensure that each student's needs are met! Students in turn are responsible and accountable with their own learning and use of supplies. I am thankful to teach in this area and treasure these children immensely!

My Project

Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times, students choose a location in the classroom that works best for them. Currently, my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as different types of tables, the class couch, laying on the carpet with a clip board, etc. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them! I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed in these areas vs. just sitting at their desk.

My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.

The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them options that are comfortable, yet effective. The bookshelves will be used to create a book nook and work space. The beanbag chairs and clipboards will be accessories to use in this area. Students will not only read good books in this area... they will also use this space to write essays, conduct research, and work on vocabulary activities.

I have seen how choice and comfort can positively affect my students' work and demeanor. I hope that these additional options will help us grow even more!
